Fears and Phobias

Are you fed up with being scared or letting a phobia control you?

So often, fears and phobias can have a devastating effect on your whole life – on your work, on your relationships – and bring about low self-esteem and lack of confidence.

Perhaps your fears stop you from enjoying travelling or socialising, or are holding you back in your career, because you might be put in situations you fear.
It doesn’t just limit opportunities for you, it can also affect your partner and family.

Fear and phobias are physically uncomfortable too

You don’t need anyone to tell you whether you’re suffering from a fear or phobia.  People’s responses vary, but if you recognise any of the following reactions to what you fear, you’re probably suffering from a phobia:

  • Heart beating so fast you can almost hear it
  • Feeling sick and clammy
  • Sweating and hot cheeks
  • Feeling like you’re suffocating
  • Dizziness and feeling light-headed
  • Thoughts racing out of control
  • Imagination filled with the worst that could happen
  • An overpowering sense of dread
  • Overwhelmed by panic

You know your fears are irrational, but you can’t shake them, and that makes them all the more frustrating.

Babies aren’t born scared, so whichever fear or phobia you suffer from, you need to know that it’s a response you’ve learned.  There might have been an incident in your childhood, or later in life, that set it off; you might have picked up that fear from your parents, or maybe you’re not quite sure what caused it.  There are powerful unconscious responses at work, which mean that no amount of trying to rationalise your fears or telling yourself not to be so silly, will help.

But before you go out and start forcing yourself to face your fears, you also need to know that this can be counter-productive.  Before you face your fears, it’s important to change your unconscious responses, otherwise you risk continuing to reinforce the very fears you’re trying to overcome. This is where hypnotherapy can really help.  Under hypnosis, you’ll learn how to relax and feel calm about whatever sets off your phobia.  It will be a gradual process, in which you learn to cope with situations that are only mildly troubling for you and then build up to being able to deal with more challenging situations.

Hypnotherapy can help with a whole range of fears and phobias from a fear of heights (vertigo) and fear of flying, a fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia) and a fear of open or crowded places (agoraphobia), to a fear of snakes and spiders or other insects.  Hypnotherapy is effective in helping to overcome fears of different kinds of situations, such as a fear of public speaking or crippling exam nerves.

What would it mean to you to be free of your phobia?

Imagine what it could be like to go about your daily life with total confidence, going wherever you like and doing whatever you like, completely fearless.  You’d feel lighter and more contented, a lot more at ease, free from restrictions and free from embarrassment about what others might think.  It might mean you’re able to take your family to places they haven’t been before, and do things your children have been missing out on.  It could mean you’re able to fulfil your potential at work, get a promotion or change your career to do something you’ve dreamed of doing.   Hypnotherapy could help you achieve this and more.

Here’s what past clients have said:

“Our holiday was great!  My phobia didn’t stop us doing anything. I made sure I listened to your recording lots before the trip. I even had it on holiday (just in case!) but didn’t need it. My husband was massively impressed and couldn’t believe the difference.  Since we got back we’ve talked about booking our trip up the Shard.  I just feel like I can do it…it’s weird! The knots have all gone.

I’d like to say thank you for helping me beat the ‘beast’! Because actually that’s how it feels. I feel ‘free’ now and not bound or crippled by fear. I could never have done this without you.

Thanks for everything.”

“When I started sessions with Anne, I was suffering from anxiety and felt shaky and exhausted.  I lacked motivation and energy to do very much and I was fearful about driving on motorways.  The sessions with Anne gave me strategies to control my fears and anxiety and think more positively.  Overall I now feel much less anxious, more motivated and my energy levels have improved.  I’ve restarted regular activities and I’m enjoying social occasions, seeing friends and entertaining.  I’ve also been able to go on a 5-hour car journey, most of which was on the M1.”
